Hybrid Rose's new album HyperKunt
HyperKunt is the 5th studio album by New Zealand’s biggest campy popstar Hybrid Rose. The title was inspired by a video call Rose has with ‘Star of the Sea’ co-writer and frequent collaborator “Jah’leel Ferebee”.
During a listening party, Jah’leel described the album as a combination of the genre ‘Hyperpop’ (which is defined as exaggerated, hyperrealistic dance pop from the early 2010s), and the LGBTQIA+ term ‘Kunt’, which is synonymous to other adjectives like ‘Fabulous’, ‘Fierce’ and ‘Intoxicating’, which made Rose say “B*tch, that’s the album title”.
Musically, this album is described as commercial pop, with hints of Hyperpop music, campy lyrics, visual aesthetics, and high-femme attitudes and perspectives. Songs like ‘I Want It All’ inspired by Paris Hilton and the 2007 club, ‘Dial Tone’ is a sassy 2 minute voicemail track, ‘Gorgeous’ about being hungover while having a movie-style fashion montage and more.
HyperKunt features an international lineup of all femme or queer artists, like LA rapper/songwriter “Hazel Rose”, LA based Hyperpop star “Ryan The God”, Canadian producer “Samuel ‘LOZ’ Lozano”, Wellington-based queer popstar and Popstar contestant “Jason Parker” and Virginia based songwriter/producer “Jah’leel Ferebee aka Techno Mystic”.
