Songbroker Song of the Day: Sonic Space Lab - 'There's No Gravity'
Luis O. Rodriguez (A.K.A. Sonic Space Lab) is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and sound engineer born in Caracas, Venezuela. After studying Sound Engineering at Taller de Arte Sonoro in Caracas, Rodriguez went on to study piano and harmony with renowned Austrian Jazz piano legend Gerry Weil with whom he later worked for Weil’s DVD ‘Navijazz’.
After graduating, Rodriguez started his career in the early 2000s working as a recording engineer and audio editor at Remoto Studios, Caracas where he worked with several bands and artists. He also worked on a couple of films for Venezuelan directors Luis Armando Roche and Jacobo Borges. After two years Rodriguez was able to go out on his own and started to work as a composer and sound engineer for different television programs, short films and advertising. He also produced and engineered albums for Sol de Medianoche (2004), Roñettes (2011), Les Projectionnisttes (2013) and La Sonata Matraka (2014).
Since moving to Dunedin in 2015, Rodriguez started to visit a local cafe where local jazz musicians had jams every week. There he was able to meet local musos like jazz trumpet player Trevor Coleman, with whom he played Latin jazz gigs around town.
In 2018 he released his first EP in New Zealand as Sonic Space Lab, ‘Changing Times’, which received a good review from indie music blog ‘Divide and Conquer’.
During this time he also composed and recorded music for a documentary, a couple of short films under the 48 hours competition and a Youtube series titled ‘Charged As’.
During this year’s Covid-19 lockdown, Rodriguez was able to finish his second EP under Sonic Space Lab, titled ‘Up in the Air’, which opened the door for him to compose for US based virtual instruments company Soundiron.
Since the release of his latest EP, Rodriguez has been busy mixing, remixing and recording with different Dunedin based artists.
‘There’s No Gravity’ is a spacey, dark and melodic electronic track with beautiful escalating sonic layers, reminiscent of French outfit Air. Listen here.
