Songbroker Song of the Day: Aro - 'Kererū'

Aro are a recognisable husband & wife duo in the New Zealand music scene, having now completed two tours nationwide with their music.

Emily (nee Rice) and Charles Looker (Ngapuhi) who blend stories in song that express the people, the culture and the heart of their home country, Aotearoa New Zealand.

Aro has been recognised in the Silver Scrolls for their song ‘Korimako’ which was a finalist for the Maioha Award 2019, and in 2020 the same song was then nominated as a finalist for the APRA Best Children’s Song Award.

Both talented musicians in their own right, their sound together is best described as 'Aotearoa Pop with Jazz, RnB & Kapahaka influences’.

‘Kererū’ is a fun, funky song told through the eyes of the native bird and its tendency to become intoxicated by eating too many berries.

Independent Music NZ have just announced this year’s recipient of the prestigious Classic Record. Look Blue Go Purple’s Compilation, released in 1991 via Flying Nun Records, takes out this year’s prize. Look Blue Go Purple played a pivotal role in the second wave of the pioneering indie rock movement known as the “Dunedin Sound”. In the overwhelmingly male-dominated Dunedin scene and wider indie music landscape, this all-female group stood out. Whilst the quintet certainly had the distinctive jangly, gently psychedelic, lo-fi Flying Nun sound, the combined vocals of Roughan, Webster and O’Malley created a synthesis that further set them apart. Songbroker welcomes Evan Rhys Born and raised in Taranaki, New Zealand, Evan is the former front man for old skool Waikato band, ‘Somersault’. Rhys has used his passion for music to help elevate the lives of those around him. He recorded and released an album of prisoners’ songs entitled, ‘If These Walls Could Speak’. He then went to work with Awa Productions on the critically acclaimed Maori Television series, ‘Songs From The Inside’. Meanwhile Evan’s own songs continued to take shape in the background and have slowly bubbled to the surface. His EP ‘Flickering Stars’ was released in February 2021. It features an eclectic mix of pop songs that are at once nostalgic and new in the same breath.
