Songbroker Welcomes Christine White

Songbroker is very pleased to welcome Christine White aboard.

White’s musical journey began with the grandiose, evocative and purposeful melodies of the pentecostal Baptist movement and moved through the raw, smoke-filled, beer-smelling couches, gay/lesbian festivals and bars, hometown pubs and city cafes of 1990s New Zealand. The visceral power of melody combined with a strong back-beat and the evocative twang of the electric guitar.

Christine has released 4 albums and composed music for Tim Bray Theatre Company (children’s theatre) for over 15 years.

She has performed as support for acts including Suzanne Vega (with Karen Hunter), Bluehouse, and Ani DiFranco.

Christine has worked with a number of musicians including Kiri Eriwata and Karen Hunter, and toured in November 2011 with fellow Ngāi Tahu songwriters Mahina Kaui and Ariana Tikao as Voices of Our Ancestors, under the umbrella of Arts on Tour NZ.

Christine has worked in collaboration with visual arts duo Tape Art New Zealand in performance installations at the Wellington Railway Station, the Hamilton Gardens and Auckland Waterfront.

White composed for the short film Tinkerbell, directed by Marian Evans which also showed in Berlin, and she was also commissioned to compose for the radio play Throat of These Hours (2013).

She has recorded with and accompanied Hinemoana Baker at numerous performances including WOMAD and the Auckland Folk Festival and has also provided session guitar for the latest Dead Famous People album (2019).

A degree in Sonic Arts Composition at Victoria University brought about a massive shift in White’s approach to sound as a compositional tool. She has been involved in sound installations at the Adam Art Gallery (2012) with Chris Black and the Nyco Chocolate Factory (2013) with Jason Wright.

Her latest album when the things that heal us hurt us and the things that hurt us heal us combines a personal story of loss and the various creative methodologies she has developed and appreciated over time.
