Songbroker Song of the Day: DateMonthYear - 'Haunted'

DateMonthYear began in 2003 as a 'way of making music'. Lineups remained flexible, and after a start as a 'recording only' organisation, DMY evolved into live performance in a variety of contexts. Four albums, 5 singles later DateMonthYear makes music that combines pop melodies, rock dynamics and cinematic atmospheres to compelling and dramatic effect.

From the album Sampler , ‘Haunted’ is an erie, atmospheric, indie rock track with a disquietening presence.

The first bars of the track feature some studio trickery; a recording of an ‘Electronic Voice Phenomenon’ of an alleged ‘real’ ghost from the early days of the Internet .

Lyrically, ‘Haunted’ is defined as ‘to remain’ or more specifically ‘to refuse to leave’ - referring to the Fugue State often experienced by Schizophrenics. The lines ‘My imaginary friend’ and ‘closing down my eyes’ and ‘if I don’t come back, tell them I’m so sorry’ point towards an exploration of that mental state.

The video was crafted from found and stock footage by director Kathleen Christian. Watch ‘Haunted’ below. To hear more from DateMonthYear, head over to the Songbroker Search Engine.
