Songbroker Welcomes Mundi

Songbroker is pleased to welcome Mundi to the fold.

Mundi’s live performance is electrifying, with dazzling interplay amongst the band and siblings Tamara and Tyson Smith bouncing musical ideas of each other at a rapid clip.

The Pale Blue Dot by Mundi captures this live energy and features Tamara Smith (flute, vocals, percussion), Chris Burke (sax), Tyson Smith (Hollie Smith – guitar), Darren Mathiassen (Shapeshifter – drums) and Johnny Lawrence (Electric Wire Hustle – bass). The album was recorded with Lee Prebble (Trinity Roots, The Black Seeds) at The Surgery studio in Wellington, as well as additional recording by Tyson Smith at Aro Valley, Cass Bay, Manuka Bay and Port Levy.

A vast area of musical terrain is explored by Mundi, including woodwind and strings, hypnotic grooves and haunting melodies, percussion and drums and dancing and merriment.Mundi's music is like Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti meeting Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson- filled with global colours, grooves and influences.To listen to Mundi head over to the Songbroker Search Engine.

Independent Music NZ have just announced this year’s recipient of the prestigious Classic Record. Look Blue Go Purple’s Compilation, released in 1991 via Flying Nun Records, takes out this year’s prize. Look Blue Go Purple played a pivotal role in the second wave of the pioneering indie rock movement known as the “Dunedin Sound”. In the overwhelmingly male-dominated Dunedin scene and wider indie music landscape, this all-female group stood out. Whilst the quintet certainly had the distinctive jangly, gently psychedelic, lo-fi Flying Nun sound, the combined vocals of Roughan, Webster and O’Malley created a synthesis that further set them apart. Songbroker welcomes Evan Rhys Born and raised in Taranaki, New Zealand, Evan is the former front man for old skool Waikato band, ‘Somersault’. Rhys has used his passion for music to help elevate the lives of those around him. He recorded and released an album of prisoners’ songs entitled, ‘If These Walls Could Speak’. He then went to work with Awa Productions on the critically acclaimed Maori Television series, ‘Songs From The Inside’. Meanwhile Evan’s own songs continued to take shape in the background and have slowly bubbled to the surface. His EP ‘Flickering Stars’ was released in February 2021. It features an eclectic mix of pop songs that are at once nostalgic and new in the same breath.
