Songbroker Song of the Day: Malcolm McCallum - 'Above The Wires'

Mal is a singer songwriter and music producer who is based on the North Shore in Auckland.

Originally from Palmerston North, Mal started playing and touring with his first original band in the early 70’s and his musical travels took him to Auckland and then on to 13 years in Australia, based in Sydney, recording a couple of albums there and being involved in the Sydney session scene through the 80’s singing on all sorts of different albums, radio and TV jingles, as well as many different live TV and touring shows. A highlight would have to be playing the support for Joni Mitchell in The Sydney Opera House, and a tour with the late great Jon English.

Returning to Auckland in 1991 Mal has worked in most of the city’s leading venues, as well as many trips down the line to places such as Queenstown and Palmerston North.

Mal has produced albums for other artists, such as Shane, recorded and produced two of his own original CDs, and is currently working on a long overdue new CD, as well as regularly performing in a downtown Auckland venue Dr Rudis.
