JARROD AKI

Jarrod delved into a variety of different genres, from his Kiwi singer-songwriters Anika Moa and Bic Runga, to the soundscape Post-Rock bands of Klangstof and Oh Hiroshima, to instrumentals bands like CHON, he attributes a lot of these acts for his new found sound that he describes as "Colourful Rock". creating narrative concepts, taking influences from pop music (Verse-Chorus structure, Concept Albums) but to introduce different options with the instrumentation itself to shape the sound for you to accompany it with your own imagination and interpretation.

"Criminals For Sale" is the brainchild of 20 year old up and coming singer-songwriter Jarrod Aki. Residing in West Auckland, Jarrod gravitated towards music when he went to Rutherford College. Inspired by grunge bands such as Nirvana, Silverchair and Soundgarden, he spent his time teaching himself how to play the guitar and drums at the age of 13. From there he started to write his own songs and joined a small punk rock outfit called Undersided. He became the frontman and lead song-writer for the band from August 2013 - March 2015 where they made the Smokefree Rock Quest West Auckland Regional Finals in 2014.

From then on Jarrod began to study Popular Music at the University of Auckland in March of 2016. With this course that he was taking on, it gave him space to develop as a musician.

"I wanted to step away from the limitations that I had with punk rock and find other options when it came to composing music. I remembered very little music theory when I started studying and I knew that I wanted to create a sound that was bigger than I could imagine."

As the course had rolled on, his musical taste started to evolve and so did his songwriting. With so many options to access music (Soundcloud, BandCamp, Spotify, Apple Music...), Jarrod delved into a variety of different genres, from his Kiwi singer-songwriters Anika Moa and Bic Runga, to the soundscape Post-Rock bands of Klangstof and Oh Hiroshima, to instrumentals bands like CHON, he attributes a lot of these acts for his new found sound that he describes as "Colourful Rock".
