John Key's 'Dune Dancing'
Dune Dancing is Auckland based jazz musician John Key’s 5th album release to date. Written during the first lockdown, Key’s sub-conscious astral travelling conjured a collection of songs assigning a global selection of genres.
Dune Dancing was recorded at The Lab Studios between lockdowns and features a fine line-up of the best jazz musicians in the country - such as Saxophonist Steve Sherriff, trumpet and flugel player Mike Booth, Mat Fieldes on bass and drummer Malcolm Taylor. Finn Scholes also plays trumpet and vibes on 2 tracks.
John Key is a recognised piano player, composer, recording artist and performer who plays in a jazzy, bluesy style.
Key has spent his whole life as a musician, both in the UK and New Zealand, touring in bands (Rough Justice, Rodger Fox Big Band, Hattie, The Hounds), nightclubs (Chips, De-Bretts, Cause Celebre), as a soloist in hotels and bars and travelling the world performing on cruise ships.
His most satisfying projects to date are his own jazz style combo’s High Risk, John Key Trio, Strange Fruit and most recently - John Key’s Jazz Monsters, under which he released Dune Dancing.
Praise for Dune Dancing:
“…these 10 originals have real emotional and musical colour, open but considered arrangements, and the players clearly enjoy the opportunities for differing dynamics and the weave of instrumentation.”
Graham Reid, Elsewhere
“A gorgeous set of musical moods here, expertly played. And not a dead-eye in the house.”
Simon Sweetman, Off The Tracks
