Songbroker Welcomes In The Shallows

Songbroker is very pleased to welcome the songs of In the Shallows to the catalogue.

When Welsh singer-songwriter Danni Parsons found harmonic delight in the raw vocals of Kiwi rock and roller Lance Shepherd, Wellington-based Folk Rock Indie Pop band 'In The Shallows' was born.

The band also features Andrew Bain (Fur Patrol) and Nick Brown (Eb & Sparrow, Vorn).

In The Shallows offer up an exquisitely diverse and silken sound that weaves together soaring harmonies, mesmerising vocals, and acoustic guitars with relatable lyrics about intricate tales of love, loss, connection, redemption, and empowerment.

Guitarist and vocalist Lance has worked as a touring / recording guitarist with Martina Topley-Bird (ex Tricky), with producers such as Johnny Dolla (Massive Attack) Leila Arab (Bjork), and has played a number of high-profile radio, television and live shows throughout Europe and the US including BBC2, Later... With Jools Holland, Montreaux Jazz Festival and SXSW.

Vocalist and songwriter Danni was raised in Wales, moving to Aotearoa in 2005. Once settled she went on to co-write lyrics with Mara Simpson (Mara and the Bushkas), who both performed in Wellington band Soul Caravan.

In The Shallows’ debut album tour took them to 22 festivals and venues throughout NZ in summer 2020/21 including NZ Spirit, Earthbeat Festival, Resolution NYE Festival, Performance Arcade - Wellington, and they are not slowing down with another jam packed summer Tour in 21/22.

Independent Music NZ have just announced this year’s recipient of the prestigious Classic Record. Look Blue Go Purple’s Compilation, released in 1991 via Flying Nun Records, takes out this year’s prize. Look Blue Go Purple played a pivotal role in the second wave of the pioneering indie rock movement known as the “Dunedin Sound”. In the overwhelmingly male-dominated Dunedin scene and wider indie music landscape, this all-female group stood out. Whilst the quintet certainly had the distinctive jangly, gently psychedelic, lo-fi Flying Nun sound, the combined vocals of Roughan, Webster and O’Malley created a synthesis that further set them apart. Songbroker welcomes Evan Rhys Born and raised in Taranaki, New Zealand, Evan is the former front man for old skool Waikato band, ‘Somersault’. Rhys has used his passion for music to help elevate the lives of those around him. He recorded and released an album of prisoners’ songs entitled, ‘If These Walls Could Speak’. He then went to work with Awa Productions on the critically acclaimed Maori Television series, ‘Songs From The Inside’. Meanwhile Evan’s own songs continued to take shape in the background and have slowly bubbled to the surface. His EP ‘Flickering Stars’ was released in February 2021. It features an eclectic mix of pop songs that are at once nostalgic and new in the same breath.
