‘So Much’ to enjoy about Renee Millner's new single
There’s ‘So Much’ to enjoy in the new release by Taranaki soul folk singer-songwriter Renée Millner.
Millner’s voice commands immediate attention, and her new single ‘So Much’ sits alongside confessional contemporaries Julia Jacklin, Beth Orton, and Courtney Barnett – and harks back to powerful vocalists such as Tanita Tikaram and Melissa Etheridge.
Millner is no stranger to the creative blocks and natural self-doubt that come with sharing your innermost feelings with crowds of strangers, but amongst that she’s found a lot to be grateful for. “There’s an abundance of good in the world, and it’s there all the time if we know how to receive it. And yet, so much of the time, we just aren’t aware of it.”
Which is why ‘So Much’ is not just a song of hope from a musician’s viewpoint – it’s for everyone struggling to find their place in the world.
The video for ‘So Much’, directed by Hugo Eaton, portrays an actor Leon Crean (Taranaki Hard) who is struggling with a
his façade, and deliberates about who he’s going to be when he knocks on the door to a family reunion. Before arriving, he descends into self-doubt and wipes away the make-up of his real personality.
“Don’t tell me what I should wear
How much product for my face
I got enough insecurities on my own
Won’t you tell the voices to leave me alone”
Like Millner’s recent releases, ‘Out Their Windows’ and ‘Fly Me Back’, ‘So Much’ is produced by Sam Johnson of Rhythm Ace Studios in Oakura.
Johnson says, “Artists like Renée deliver music that's from the heart, that can have a chance to mean something to other listeners, and that places a bit of value back on the idea that humans need nourishment from the music they hear.”
