Silk Cut launches Debut EP 'Astronaut'
Drawing on their affection for 60’s and 70’s British TV and early 90’s shoegaze, Silk Cut are at once eccentric and perfectly normal. Their themes are arbitrary, as if having volunteered themselves - UFOs, shipwrecks, betrayal, obsession, comic book detectives, apparitions. Recorded with a load of reverb and harmony, they present like echo-chamber daydreams.
Silk Cut are songwriter Andrew Thorne (guitars, voice, sequencers), Aidan Phillips (basses, voice), with Mike Burrows (drums, voice) and Tom Irvine (guitars, voice).
Silk Cut was only an idea at the beginning of 2020. The songs came to Andrew all at once during the nationwide lockdown of March and April. There was indeed no time like the present. Taking the experience of the earlier bands, and referring to old favourites (Radiohead, Ride, The Church, Swervedriver, Slowdive) the songs are still unmistakably Andrew Thorne’s. Guitar is the featured instrument - spacious, textured, melodious, echoed - backed by simple synth washes, vocal harmony and a stately groove.
Recorded between April & July 2021, Silk Cut’s new releases comprise two self-funded EPs. Both untitled, they’ll be known by their respective cover images (‘astronaut’ and ‘panda’).
The first, ‘astronaut’ is out now and has four tracks:
Getting In Close
Dream King
Black Night Sky
Undone
