Roulettes release new album Demosphere
Melodic indie pop band Roulettes have just released their new album Demosphere - a collection of tracks that evolved out of demos and as such did not involve any recording studio.
All recordings were done at home in Auckland by Justin McLean or at home in Hanoi by Ben Grant.
“‘Demosphere’ is a place of discovery where the imagination is free to make choices in the process of ‘finding’ or ‘realising’ an idea. We wanted to capture the freshness of the demo which have often been our favourite versions of our songs, before they become overworked. Demos seem to have the magic of discovery imprinted in them. Most of the takes here are first takes. Accidents occurred, and we let them be.” Explains Justin.
Two tracks ‘Whatever Comes to Mind’ and ‘Something’s Changing’ are beautiful cover renditions originally written by the late Andrew Brough of Bike and Straitjacket Fits fame.
“We included these 2 previously unreleased songs by Andrew Brough, which we had demos of, provided by Andrew’s brother Don. Andrew taught these songs to me in 1992 when I played in the first version of Bike,” says Justin. “They recently resurfaced on a clip on YouTube of the first gig we played, and I got to relearning them. I always loved these songs, and wanted to share them with a wider audience. I recorded them using Andrew’s guitar.”
Roulettes’ energetic, inventive sound features killer riffs and soaring harmonies, sonic grooves and hooks galore.
You may well have heard Roulettes on your radio, or on the soundtrack of classic NZ shows such as Outrageous Fortune, Shortland St, Filthy Rich and 800 Words.
