Wayne Gillespie's Famous Blue Raincoat build it 'Brick by Brick'
When the foundations of your house are shaken there is only one way to build it up …Brick By Brick.
That’s just what Wayne Gillespie’s ensemble Famous Blue Raincoat have done with their new single. A band named after a Leonard Cohen song certainly connotes a group who have music history knowledge and music experience.
Singer/songwriter Wayne Gillespie has been making quality music in Australia since CBS released his second album New Locations here back in 1987, and was already a favourite son back in his native New Zealand for a few years before that, while drummer/percussionist Rob Grosser has worked with some of Australia’s best musicians including the late Pete Wells of Rose Tattoo, Jimmy Barnes’s guitarist Tim Gaze as well as overseas artists Bob Margolin (ex- Muddy Waters), Jimmy Barnes and Deep Purple ‘s Jon Lord & Ian Gillian.
Wayne’s collection of songs from his forthcoming album Illusions has been enhanced with the help of friends such as sax player Ric Robertson (dig/eon/Baecastuff), American guitarist now Zealander Nigel Gavin, bass player and pal Goby Catt, now living in Vancouver, Canada, and another kiwi, Brendan Power (harmonica).
Gillespie has called this music “FRAZZ” as it contains flavours of Folk/Rock and Jazz.
A touch of Rock/Funk has also been built ‘Brick by Brick’ starting with Wayne’s Stonesy guitar motif with Robs funk-rock rhythms providing the foundation, cemented by Goby Catts driving Bass –Wayne’s craggy vocals providing structure then sandpapered and brushed with the Jazz colours from Ric Robertson’s saxophone.
