Songbroker Song of the Day: Steve Tofa - 'Bone Dat Needs Pickin'

Steve Tofa describes his music as ‘Koko Soul’, after being told by some of his peers that his voice resembles the smoothness of ‘chocolate’; “If there is not enough sugar, it can taste very bitter. If you add too much then you’re asking for heartburn”.

The former frontman for Auckland underground indie Rock/Soul band, ‘The Mercenaries’ from the late 90’s to mid 2000’s, has worked providing both vocals and instrumentation to music for the likes of Don McGlashlan (The Mutton Birds), Soni Segala (Dei Hamo) and Paul Mathews (Stylus,I Am Giant) to name a few.

Having recently released his debut album ‘The Barefooted Beast’, he has another album in the works with several standalone singles to complete; His next project ‘ Koko Stax ’ is due out at the end of the year.

Steve’s song ‘Bone Dat Needs Pickin’ has just been chosen as one of the 20 finalists for the coveted APRA Silver Scroll Awards.

The authenticity and unique flavour of this multi-genre track make it well-deserving of its inclusion in the top 20. Listen below.

"With a voice that's powerful and heaven-sent, Steve Tofa's original songs are intimate and personal, a blend of folk, rock and soul. Steve performs with a band of close friends and musical whanau." Steven Shaw (Audio Culture)
