Kevin Field gives his Final Doctor of Musical Arts Recital

Pianist, composer and Senior Lecturer in Jazz Studies at the School of Music, Kevin Field presents his greatly anticipated and final Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) recital at the Kenneth Myers Centre on February 18th.

Field, who has been lauded by Jazz journalist John Fenton as, “arguably Auckland’s first call pianist” will share his explorations of the last six years, concentrating on articulations of harmonic and rhythmic tensions.

An exciting artist, Kevin has performed in the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand and his most recent album release, The A List, was nominated for Best Jazz Album at the 2016 New Zealand Jazz Awards.  As a member of the University’s staff jazz ‘super group’ DOG, he achieved further notoriety with the band’s success at the 2015 NZ Music Awards, winning Best Jazz Album.

Kevin’s final recital pledges to deliver an evening full of expectation with a presentation of research informed performance and composition, featuring his refined and distinctive manipulations of tension and harmony, that artfully re-examine the language of jazz.

Kevin’s recital is in fulfilment of the requirements for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree and the culmination of his studies over the last 6 years.

Joining him are recent School of Music graduates, Michael Howell (guitar), Cameron McArthur (double bass)  Stephen Thomas (drums), and fellow Senior Lecturer Roger Manins (saxophone).
