Songbroker welcomes Miho Wada

Songbroker is thrilled to welcome the songs of Miho Wada to the catalogue.

Miho's musical journey to date is rich and varied.

Born in Hino city, Tokyo, Miho grew up by the sea in Miyazaki and later in Christchurch, New Zealand.

She completed her Bachelor of Music degree in Flute Performance at the University of Canterbury, then moved to London for further study at the Trinity College of Music.

She worked for the National Orchestra of Malta for a short time before deciding to challenge her creativity and explore other musical possibilities. In 2008 she left for Cuba, studying flute and performing with members of Sones de Oriente, Kotumba, Sierra Maestra and Buena Vista Social Club in Havana and Santiago de Cuba.

Miho has performed internationally with artists such as Nigel Kennedy, Jarvis Cocker, Ska Cubano and recorded a series of TV adverts with Iggy Pop.  After touring for WOMAD festivals in 2009, Miho returned to NZ and started composing and performing her own original music, debuting internationally at the SXSW showcase in Austin, Texas in 2010.

In 2011 she formed Miho’s Jazz Orchestra (MJO), which has been described as one of the most entertaining jazz acts in New Zealand, performing sold out shows at jazz festivals and concert series around the country, as well as touring frequently in New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

MJO have released six albums since then and three of which have clinched positions in the official NZ Album Chart Top 20 for several weeks each, including “Bumpy Road” (2015) which reached Top 10.

In 2014 Miho travelled to the U.S.A. to study Traditional Jazz in New Orleans and also performed at the historic Preservation Hall.  Along with her husband and MJO violinist Pascal Roggen she recorded her EP “Memphis Dreamin” at the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis, with some of the finest studio musicians available.

On their latest album "Fancier Tango", the band performs the fans' all time favourite "Fancy Tango”. MJO recorded four of the tracks straight off the back of their five week National Tour due to the growing demand from fans all around the country. This is also a rare chance to experience the classical side of Wada’s original pan-pacific sounds.
