Songbroker Newsletter October 2017
Songbroker has been very busy of late with various film and television licensing projects, not to mention the ever growing Songbroker publishing catalogue which is evolving into a rich and diverse resource of NZ music for local and international clients. Here's a bit of a rundown of some of the exciting projects we have been involved with recently.
Filthy Rich Series Two
Filthy Rich Season 2 has just screened its final episode on TVNZ 2 and what a great season it was. Filthy Productions have been extremely supportive of NZ music, using Songbroker artists exclusively. Artists include Black River Drive, Eva Prowse, Abby Holden, Kevin Field, The Roulettes, Fanfickk, These Automatic Changers, Collapsing Cities, Ash Grey and Modern Chair to name a few.
Wanted Series Two
Strangers, Lola and Chelsea, intervene in a fatal carjacking while waiting at a suburban bus stop, and are subsequently thrust into a chase from authorities across Australia with a vehicle filled with cash. Series 2 has started airing in Oz an we hope to see it screen in NZ soon - featuring some great songs from Songbroker artists such as Solomon Cole Band's 'Ring Your Bell', Greg Johnson's 'Floor One' and Kara James Gordon's 'Settle The Score'.
Human Traces
Kiwi writer-director Nic Gorman's debut feature film Human Traces is a psychological thriller set on an isolated subantarctic island. Human Traces screened at the NZIFF on the 5th of August. The film features the iconic Graeme Downes song 'Death and the Maiden' performed by The Verlaines. Keep an eye out for Human Traces at a theatre near you.
McKenzie Muffin Splits
Bread brand McKenzie Muffin Splits utilised the 'Under The Stars' instrumental track, written by Geoff Matthews / Wayne Bell / Jan Hellriegel for a radio commercial. Thanks to Shine agency.
Farmers New Season SS17 Women's Fashion
Gareth Thomas' wonderfully appropriate pop song 'All Eyes In The Room' was selected for the Farmers Spring/Summer Fashion 2017 television campaign. Watch the TVC here.
800 Words
800 Words is an Aus/NZ comedy-drama series, co-produced by South Pacific Pictures and Seven Productions for the Seven Network. First premiering in 2015, the series quickly cemented its popularity down under and abroad. Season 3 began filming in NZ earlier this year and we can't wait.. Stay tuned for song placements in future episodes.
Waru
The NZ film Waru is set to have its NZ release on October 19th.Seven female Māori writer/directors and one writer/director pair have collaborated to bring 8 vignettes, presented as continuous shots, that unfold around the tangi of a young boy, Waru. The film trailer features the beautiful song Matariki written by (A Tikao / L Glen). Watch the Waru trailer here.

Seven Rivers Walking - Haere Mārire
Filmmakers Gaylene Barnes and Kathleen Gallagher interview diverse Cantabrians connected to the area's rivers, to educate themselves and others, about the damage done and the opportunities available for repair. The wonderful music from Songbroker artist Ariana Tikao's album Tuia features in the film. Seven Rivers Walking - Haere Mārire premieres at the Christchurch International Film Festival on August 19th.
Grey Skate Magazine Video
A video by James Cruickshank for Grey Skateboard Magazine, in association with Converse Cons. Filmed on location in Marseille, France and starring: Mike Arnold, Matlok Bennett-Jones Edouard Depaz, Sylvain Tognelli and Juan Virues and using Look Blue Go Purple's track 'As Does The Sun' .
SS17 Home at Farmers TVC
Farmers chose iconic kiwi band Goodshirt and their song 'Blowing Dirt' ( written by Gareth Thomas, Rodney Fisher, Murray Fisher and Mike Beere )for the Spring Summer 2017 Home campaign. Great choice Farmers. Watch the TVC here.
Shortland Street
NZ's longest running soap, Shortland Street features songs from Black River Drive, The Calico Brothers, The DeSotos, Aaron Carpenter, Apollo Steamtrain, Andy Richards, Eva Prowse, Gareth Thomas, Kurt Shanks, Tricks & Sleeves, Jackie Bristow, Coach, Barebones and Cabaret, Eyreton Hall, Radioglo and Gary Harvey. The Brokenwood Mysteries
The Brokenwood Mysteries is a series of murder mystery stories set in a seemingly quiet country town where the town's newest resident, Detective Mike Shepherd, finds that murder lurks in even the most homely location. Stay tuned for future Songbroker placements.

We are currently working on the new children's drama series Wilde Ride, directed by Justin Harwood, due to screen on TVNZ 2 and featuring the music of Songbroker artists. Also stay tuned for song placements in up and coming Netflix shows!
