Graeme Downes


Graeme is a senior lecturer at the department of Music at the University of Otago. He completed his PhD on the music of Mahler and nineteenth century symphonic antecedents in 1993. He teaches song writing and musicology. He has a thirty-plus-year career as a songwriter and performer in the Verlaines and as a solo performer. He is currently working on the band’s tenth studio album, a double album entitled Dunedin Spleen. The most recent performance by the band was in its 1986 incarnation with Jane Dodd and Robbie Yeats at the New Zealand Festival last March. He regularly contributes pre-concert lectures the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra on a range of classical music and sits on the orchestra’s board. He is currently undergoing research into late-period Beethoven. He is also, from time to time, a freelance musicologist in the area of copyright disputes.
